Why this year is the most important mother’s day for me

Last year was probably the most special mother’s day for me.  It was my first!! But this year’s mother’s day might be the most important. Not so much for me, but for my mom. You see, it was almost 11 months ago that my mom had a stroke.
Luckily, it was just a warning sign. My mom’s recovery has been nothing short of remarkable considering what happened to her. When people see her, they’re shocked to learn that she ever went through that. Physically, she looks fine. However, her brain is still recovering, and may continue to heal for years to come.

Just a few months after my mom’s stroke, I was paying my respects to my friend who lost her mom to a battle with cancer. When speaking with her, she said that the one piece of advice that she has is to spend as much time as possible with our mothers. And to me, her words couldn’t have been clearer. I was all too aware how close we were to losing my mom.

Growing up we might have not had the closest mother-daughter relationship. She was the disciplinarian and I was the rebellion. I hardly told my parents much as I was always afraid that they would punish me for one reason or another (they were very strict). It wasn’t until I had my own son that my mom and I got closer. I needed her more than ever then. In fact, a day doesn’t go by when we don’t talk. Our relationship has truly changed and now, we’re not just mother / daughter, but we’re friends!

And so, this year’s mother’s day is the most important one yet because I get to spend it with my mom. I’m planning a surprise day at a local spa for the two of us*. I’m excited to celebrate this day with her and look forward to many more years to come!

What are your plans for mother’s day? Are you celebrating with your mom, your family or both?

*Oooops! I just ruined the surprise. No just joking she doesn’t follow my blog, its slightly too Web 2.0 for her 🙂

  1. “spend as much time as possible with our mothers” — I wholeheartedly second your friend’s advice. My mother is currently going through a battle with illness and it’s such a worrying time for her and for me. Mothers are important and we must try to treasure every moment.

    1. Hi Grace,
Thanks for sharing. I wish your mom a speedy and healthy recovery. Hope you will have lots to celebrate this coming mother’s day. All the best to you and your mom. Xoxo

  2. Maya you just made me tear… glad your mom recovered… my mom is my best best friend and specially after the girls were born I realized how amazing it is to have her close to me (both physically and emotinaly) I think my girls mistaken her for their mommy haha…
To be honest I am not sure what we would do but will figure something out .. It is my mom 60s bday this year so we are planning something big! Enjoy mothers day and thanks for sharing! xo

    1. Hi Shirit,
Glad you enjoyed the post. Sometimes, we don’t realize how amazing mothers (and fathers) are until we have our own kids. I’m just glad I have time to make it up to my parents after evrything I put them through as a teenager 😉
Mazal-tov to your mom on her 60th! I’m sure you’ll have a blast whatever you do to celebrate. Xoxo
